Prasa accelerates rail signalling upgrades to boost Durban passenger services
Durban rail network receives major upgrade
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa is accelerating work to improve passenger rail services in Durban. It is running an R11 billion signalling and telecommunications programme across several corridors. A further R2 billion is going into rehabilitating the Umlazi Corridor. Signalling is being completed and handed over section by section, which makes it a planning decision, not a bidding sprint. If you supply civil, electrical or telecoms work, map which corridors sit inside your delivery radius. Do it before the next package is advertised.

New signalling sections launch in October
In October the agency unveils the first of seven sections where signalling has been completed. The first covers the corridor between Crossmoor and Havenside. The second covers the Rossburgh to Pinetown Corridor. Five more sections still follow. The first two corridors are named, so you can see where activity starts. If your delivery footprint covers either named corridor, get your Central Supplier Database registration current now. A lapsed tax compliance status can rule you out of a bid later.

Access to markets beats access to funding
The second State of the SMME in South Africa report surveyed 800 small businesses. It was published by the Shoprite Group, with research by World Wide Worx. More owners named access to markets as the thing that would grow their business than named financial support. A multi-year rail programme is exactly that kind of market. Winning the order is step one. Delivering it takes working capital, so line that up before the package lands. If you already deliver civil, electrical or signalling work, the named corridors are where to look first. If you have never held a public contract, registration and compliance come before any bid.

What to do next: Review your transport and civil engineering bids against the corridors PRASA has named. Make sure your business is fully registered on the Central Supplier Database. Keep your tax compliance current before applying for public contracts. If you win work and need cash to deliver it, start with a Sourcefin assessment.
We’ve moved – more room to enable
Sourcefin has moved to 148 Katherine Street, Barlow Park, Sandton. More space, more desks, more room for the people who enable South Africa’s forgotten SMMEs. Same team, same numbers, new address – come and see us.

Purchase order funding without a track record in SA
You won the order but the business is young and there is no collateral. The three checks a purchase order funder actually runs, and what gets deals rejected.

Tip of the week
If you bank with FNB and hold a confirmed purchase order, ask your banker about a referral to Sourcefin.
Through a referral arrangement with FNB, more businesses can access Purchase Order Financing (POF) on confirmed work. FNB brings trusted banking infrastructure and can refer eligible business clients to Sourcefin. All assessments and funding decisions are made solely by Sourcefin, and a referral does not guarantee that funding will be offered.

Durban rail signalling contract delivered smoothly using Purchase Order Financing (POF)
A KwaZulu-Natal engineering contractor secured a municipal rail infrastructure contract but needed capital for specialised cabling. By securing Purchase Order Financing (POF), the business had its supplier paid directly by the funder to release the materials. This preserved the contractor’s existing cash reserves, ensuring the installation stayed on track without strain.
This is a fictional illustration of how Sourcefin’s products are typically used. Names and figures are not real.
Enabling delivery across South Africa
South Africa’s economic trajectory rests on the shoulders of the entrepreneurs who deliver on critical public and private projects. We believe that securing the contract should be the hardest part of your journey, not funding the delivery.
