Diesel price hikes press margins as lending benchmarks face review
Diesel price increases weigh on transport margins
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced a significant increase in the price of diesel this week. This hike is already driving up operational costs across South African transport, logistics, and agricultural sectors. Because logistics costs underpin almost all physical goods, these rising input costs will inevitably trickle down to affect food and retail distribution networks. For logistics and supply-chain SMMEs operating on fixed-price contracts, this immediate cost increase must be absorbed or managed.
A proposed shift away from the prime lending rate
The South African Reserve Bank has published a consultation paper proposing that the prime lending rate be retired as the main reference for loans, with the repo rate taking its place. This is a proposal under consultation, not a change in force. The SARB has set out a phased approach with no fixed start date yet – the transition would follow the retirement of Jibar and be carefully managed. Legacy contracts would be protected through fallback provisions, so loan pricing does not automatically change. Nothing changes on your current facilities today. It is still worth understanding how your borrowing is referenced before any change arrives.
What to do next: Review your active transport and supply contracts for fuel surcharge clauses to pass on the latest diesel price increases. When negotiating new mid-term contracts, ensure you include pricing escalation clauses to protect your margins from fuel volatility.
Our FNB referral arrangement is now live
Sourcefin and FNB have a referral arrangement in place, and it is now live. Banks are built for stability. Profitable but broke? The cash-flow trap for transport SMMEs
You can win the work, deliver it and still run out of money. Joshua unpacks the trap that quietly sinks transport SMMEs – profit is not cash, and why building for ten years wins.

While the interest rate cycle remains stable, rising diesel costs and a proposed change to how loans are referenced make close cash-flow monitoring worthwhile.

Tip of the week
Check your commercial transport contracts for fuel surcharge clauses before month-end billing.
With the latest diesel price increase, absorbing the extra cost directly will erode your logistics margins unless you activate contract escalation clauses.

Logistics provider secures R1.2m fuel and maintenance capital for municipal contract
A transport SMME secured a contract to move municipal maintenance equipment but lacked the upfront cash to purchase bulk fuel and service its fleet for the first run. The business could not access traditional overdraft facilities quickly enough to meet the delivery deadline. By using Purchase Order Financing (POF), the business had its fuel suppliers paid directly, allowing the fleet to dispatch on schedule. This structured facility enabled successful delivery on the contract without draining the business's limited daily cash reserves.
