This week’s theme
Free State’s new industrial projects will need local suppliers – get ready now
What was launched on 9 October
On 9 October, President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the Free State Catalytic Investment and Industrialisation Programme in QwaQwa. Three investment initiatives were announced, worth more than R120 billion between them. The largest is a renewable energy development by YJC, alongside a Joylong automotive manufacturing facility and a Walk of Life apple juice concentrate plant. Together, government expects them to create thousands of jobs. The provincial government has also committed to tracking the announced actions over the next 30, 60 and 90 days, so progress updates should follow quickly.

Where SMMEs fit in
Government is clear that these factories will not run on their own. According to the announcement, local businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises, could supply components, materials, packaging, maintenance, security, cleaning, transport and professional services. President Ramaphosa said established manufacturers and small businesses should prepare to meet these needs. The Free State Premier, MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, urged investors to develop local suppliers. If your business already delivers any of these services, this is a supply pipeline worth tracking from day one.

Why the waiting period is your head start
Supplier registration processes and procurement timelines have not been published yet. Vutivi Business notes that local inclusion will depend on how procurement is arranged and on whether suppliers can meet the requirements. That gap is your window. Businesses with their compliance documents, a clear capability statement and recent references ready will be first in line when buyers start looking. Businesses that wait for the announcement will be preparing against the same deadline as everyone else, with less time to get it right.

What to do next: This week, write a one-page capability statement that names exactly what you can supply – components, packaging, maintenance, transport or professional services – with two recent references. Then check that your tax compliance, company registration and B-BBEE documents are current, so you can respond the day supplier registration opens. When a confirmed order lands, Purchase Order Funding can pay your supplier so you can deliver.

What PO funders look for in a deal (it isn’t your credit score)
Deal Manager Dudu Zondo explains what decides a purchase order deal: who the end buyer is, whether the margins add up and whether the deal is healthy.

What is a purchase order? A practical guide for South African businesses
A purchase order is the buyer’s commitment to buy, issued before delivery. Here is what goes on one and how it differs from an invoice and a quote.

Tip of the week
Keep a ready-to-send compliance pack – tax compliance status PIN, company registration documents and B-BBEE certificate or affidavit – in one folder.
Large buyers onboarding new suppliers move quickly, and the business that can send its documents the same day looks ready to deliver.

Packaging supplier lands a manufacturer order bigger than its cash flow
A Free State packaging business won a confirmed order to supply cartons to a regional food processor. The order was larger than anything it had delivered before, and the raw materials had to be paid for upfront. With purchase order funding, the funder paid the material supplier directly against the confirmed order. The business delivered on time and now uses the completed order as a reference for its next bid.
