This week’s theme
Fuel prices rise on Wednesday – reprice your quotes before you commit
What changed this week
On 5 October, the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced a fuel price adjustment that takes effect on Wednesday, 7 October. Petrol, diesel, illuminating paraffin and LPGas all go up. The statement links the increase to higher international crude oil prices, while the rand firmed slightly against the dollar. It is not the first fuel increase SMMEs have had to absorb this year, and every one of them reaches your pricing. For any business that moves goods, people or equipment, the change shows up on the very first tank.

Where it lands in your business
Fuel sits inside almost every price you quote. It drives your own deliveries and site travel, and it comes back to you through your suppliers' transport charges. Diesel generators, plant and machinery cost more to run from Wednesday. Small businesses are particularly exposed because fuel touches transport, deliveries, commuting and supplier pricing all at once. If you quoted a fixed price last month, that margin was set before this increase was known. The cost rises whether or not your client has paid you yet.

Three moves before you sign anything new
First, go through every open quote and confirm its validity period and whether it allows for price adjustment. Second, ask your suppliers to confirm delivery charges in writing before you place your next order. Third, recalculate the transport line on any tender you are pricing now, so your bid reflects Wednesday’s costs rather than last month’s. A tender won at the wrong price is still a contract you have to deliver. Keep your updated workings on file, so the next adjustment takes minutes rather than an afternoon.
What to do next: Before you submit your next quote or tender, rerun its transport and fuel costs at the new prices. If a confirmed order needs materials paid for upfront, Purchase Order Financing (POF) can pay your supplier directly, so your own cash stays free for the running costs that just went up.

Tip of the week
Put a clear validity period on every quote you send, and state that prices are subject to change after that date.
A quote with no expiry date leaves you carrying every cost increase that lands between quoting and ordering. A validity period lets you requote professionally instead of absorbing the difference.

Pretoria developer secures office refurbishment deal but lacks upfront material cash
A Gauteng-based commercial property contractor won a contract to upgrade public office facilities but struggled to fund the bulk material orders upfront. By using Purchase Order Financing (POF), the business had its supplier paid directly by the funder to release the necessary structural components. This enabled uninterrupted delivery on-site, allowing the contractor to complete the phase on schedule and protect their performance record.
